Treatment for Malignant Melanoma

Malignant Melanoma is the most rare skin cancer and also accounts for the highest mortality rate among all the skin cancers, being responsible for one death every hour. It most often results from cancerous moles.

This is why it is absolutely critical to be watchful of changing existing moles or sudden new moles. These are indicators to be mindful of:

  • Moles that bleed and/or itch
  • Moles changing in color, shape or size
  • Any new spots that may bleed or itch and are dark in color
The vital factor for an improved prognosis in treating malignant melanoma is early detection. This cannot be understated. This aggressive form of cancer is the leading cancer in women 25 to 29 years and for young women 15-29 years of age, though is more common in men overall.

Shallotte residents are encouraged to come in for a skin cancer screening and a mole check

Treatment for Basal Cell Carcinoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma is the slowing forming type of skin cancer and also the most common type of skin cancer. It will most often appear on the hands, arms, face and other areas of the body exposed to the sun frequently.

Skin deformities and changes to look out for are:
  • A reddish patch, possibly itchy and will not heal
  • A raised area that may or may not have blood vessels present
  • A taut or shiny area with a scar-like appearance
  • An open sore that bleeds, heals and returns
  • Pearly appearing lumps range from flesh colored to brown
Early stage basal cell carcinoma can be treated readily. It rarely results in death and rarely spreads. However, if this type of skin cancer is left untreated, basal cell cancer can spread to surrounding tissue. The best treatment option for basal cell carcinoma is most often surgical removal.

Contact our office at 843-399-9965 or visit our main website.  to schedule an appointment for a skin cancer check, to see if you require Basal Cell Carcinoma treatment.
Treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma can extend deeply into surrounding tissue and spread. This makes it a dangerous form of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma prognosis is favorable and almost always curable when caught early and surgically removed. Though a more favorable prognosis depends on paying attention changing skin markings.

Squamous cell skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body potentially resemble skin cancer bumps having a central depression and cancerous warts.

Shallotte residents are encouraged to be watchful for the following warning signs:
  • An open sore that bleeds and may last for weeks
  • A growth that is scaly, rough and resembles a wart
  • A scaly, crusty patch that bleeds and is red
  • A bleeding lump, possibly growing quickly and has a central depression
If left untreated, Squamous cell skin cancer can be deadly. For this reason, it must be taken seriously.

Treatment for Precancerous Skin Lesions
Photodynamic Therapy is the latest advancement for treating precancerous skin lesions and Actinic Keratosis Offered to our patients in-house, this procedure involves a topical medication called levulinic acid.

This medication is applied to precancerous skin for a preset amount of time. Following, a blue light is directed to the affected area and aimed at the destruction of precancerous skin cells.

The procedure is generally tolerated very well by most of our patients. The application of this medication is painless, although exposure to the BLU-U Light can possibly have a slight stinging sensation.

Skin can appear “sunburned” for up to 4-7 days after treatment.

Skin Cancer Prevention
Being sun smart is the number one way to prevent skin cancer. You should always wear sunscreen and reapply to cover sensitive areas every two hours. It is best to avoid long-term, direct sun exposure between the hours of 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

And while these great tips give you an advantage for healthy, protected skin, keep in mind that even one bad, blistering sunburn can put you at an elevated risk for skin cancer.

You are wise to be concerned regarding any abnormalities to your skin, so if you notice any changes in moles or warts or any new ones, call us to discuss your concerns and set appointment today.
