Understanding Skin Cancer

Skin cancer occurs from skin cells and can show up on any part of the body. It primarily stems from exposure to ultraviolet light from tanning beds or the being in the sun. Even those of us in Shalotte are unable to avoid spending time outdoors entirely. Daily, weekly and monthly we are exposed to sunlight.

The most important fact to recognize is most skin cancer lesions respond with great success to skin cancer treatment, most notably especially when treated in the early stages. Your number one advantage for an excellent skin cancer prognosis is to be screened for skin cancer and schedule routine appointments with a trusted dermatologist.

Skin Cancer Types

Skin cancer occurs when mutations develop in the DNA of our skin cells. Our skin becomes damaged then rapidly multiplies and the mutated cells begin to multiply in a strange pattern. This mutation and unusual multiplication is the very foundation leading to malignant tumors.

Skin cancer will manifest itself in many different manners. Some malignant tumors are common, some rare, yet they all behave differently.

The three types of skin cancer are:
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma
  • Malignant Melanoma
The health of Shallotte residents matters to us here at Atlantic Dermatology. We manage courses of treatment for all forms of skin cancer.

If you live in or near the area and have any concerns about a skin abnormality or require treatment for skin cancer or would desire a skin cancer check reach out to us  to schedule an appointment at 843-399-9965 or visit our main website.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous Cell Carcinoma ranks as the second most common type of skin cancer. This type of skin cancer primarily occurs on areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun, but it is possible to occur anywhere on the body. It can develop deep in the skin tissue and possibly metastasize to other areas of the body.

If it is detected early and surgically removed, prognosis for Squamous Cell Carcinoma is greatly improved and is almost always curable.

As the most common type of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma generally develops on areas of the skin most often exposed to the sun.

Basal cell carcinoma is a slow growing type of skin cancer and is most commonly found on scalp, ears, face, neck, hands and arms.

Malignant Melanoma

Malignant Melanoma is the most deadly and dangerous type of skin cancer, yet it is the least common. This type of skin cancer will usually present itself as a new mole or a mutation in an existing mole.

Cancerous moles can seem to appear or change suddenly. Early skin cancer diagnosis and treatment is absolutely vital to treating malignant melanoma.

Skin Cancer and it's Warning Signs

Skin cancer bumps, spots and marks will vary widely. They light or dark, flat or raised or scaly or scar-like and more. Be vigilant to watch for rapidly growing lumps or bumps, skin spots re-occur or don’t heal and moles that suddenly appear or change in appearance.

Even though skin cancer can appear in various different ways, these common warning signs should not be ignored.

  • A lump having a central depression that will possibly grow quickly
  • A mole that changes in size, color or shape
  • A reddish and/or scaly patch that doesn’t heal
  • A bleeding recurring sore
Early detection is critical to improved skin cancer prognosis. Do not hesitate to schedule an appointment promptly if you find any suspicious areas on your body.
